Telling my Story: Analysing and Reporting on Outcomes

This workshop is the third (and final) in our Let’s Evaluate! programme. Participants will benefit most if they attend all 3 ‘Let’s Evaluate!’ workshops in their intended order.

Workshop Description

This informative workshop investigates how to pull evidence together and make sense of it, even though it might be coming from different places and consist of different types of data!

You will look at the best practice in reporting and explore what a positive funder relationship looks like.

Using evaluation for learning is just as important as using it to provide outcome evidence for your funders and this workshop examines how your evaluation practice can achieve both of these and more.

At this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Analyse information collected to evidence the achievement of your project outcomes 
  • Report on the achievement of project outcomes to funders and stakeholders
  • Learn from the analysis to improve project delivery

Staff or volunteers from third sector organisations in Scotland

Note: You must have attended our workshop Getting Started: Outcomes and Indicators before attending this workshop or you should have a strong understanding of outcomes. This is one workshop that will be delivered over 2 days. You must attend both parts of the workshop on both dates for the full learning.

Our three Let’s Evaluate! workshops follow a sequence and most people find it best to attend all three in order; but you can pick and choose.

Some funders will pay for evaluation support so third sector organisations should always ask their funder if that’s an option.  Click here for more information.

How our workshops run:

There will be a mixture of PowerPoint presentation and trainer guided exercises. We’ll help you learn from other participants and apply the learning to your work. There will be an icebreaker exercise at the start of the day to get to know each other. Participants will be placed in small groups to complete group activities.

Joining Information

We are running this workshop using Zoom video conferencing.  You’ll need a stable internet connection (and preferably a webcam and microphone).  We’ll email in advance with a link, password and all the materials you will need for the workshop. About Shona

Shona joined ESS in February 2017. She spent many years prior to this working and volunteering in various areas of the third sector including youth work, criminal justice, and HIV & hepatitis C. 

Shona’s role at ESS involves developing and delivering our training programmes, as well as facilitating tailored evaluation support sessions. Her work is about helping organisations to plan their evaluation, keeping it simple and relevant to their context and the people they work with.

“My favourite part of my job is talking to organisations about fit-for-purpose evaluation; helping them to be clear about the difference they hope to make, how they know when they’re making it, and how best to capture that with their own situation and people in mind.

Often, many are pleasantly surprised to realise that they’re already doing it – they just don’t have it written down in a clear evaluation plan. That’s where I come in!”

About Gary

Gary’s background is in education and project management of third sector programmes for children and young people. He completed his PhD at University of Glasgow. His research interests relate to social justice, citizenship, philosophy of education and trauma-informed practice. He initially trained and worked as a professional musician.

Gary is the Senior Evaluation Support Manager at Evaluation Support Scotland. He provides evaluation support to third sector organisations, including tailored support and more complex pieces of work, while also working on Business Development for ESS. He leads the Third Sector Research Forum and he works with colleagues at Scottish Government to improve funding relationships with the third sector. He also develops resources and delivers evaluation training workshops when demand is high.
