Funeral Link is a charity based in Dundee which aims to prevent hardship as a result of paying for a funeral. They recognised that as a new organisation, drawing out learning and being better able to communicate their impact is important.
Funeral Link service manager – Linda – attended ‘Let’s Evaluate!’ workshops and received 2 sessions of tailored support.
Funeral Link was doing well measuring the financial gains they make for families… but found it harder to articulate the difference they make to people’s ability to cope with managing a funeral.
The first tailored support session focused on how to define Funeral Link’s soft outcomes around the wellbeing of the families they work with.

The second session focused on analysis and reporting. We aimed to help draw out key learning and present the information in a way that was transparent and easy to engage with.
What difference did we make?
After the workshops and tailored support sessions Linda said she felt more confident in reporting, and that her reports much better showed the true impact of their work.
“Having the sessions in addition to training was a chance to dig deeper and work out what I really needed. The work ESS supported really helped me define the wellbeing outcome of our work, which has led to a few funding successes since.”
– Linda, Funeral Link

What did we learn?
Tailored support is a valuable way to embed learning from workshops.
Do you need help embedding your learning from workshops?

Our principles for good evaluation can help you to judge if you are happy with your evaluation. They are used within this story to highlight the principle that is being demonstrated:
– Good evaluation should be about what matters
