It’s Trustees Week – the time of year when we celebrate the amazing contribution made by trustees for their charities, and recognise the difference they make!
But what does a Trustee actually do…?
Among other things, our Board of Trustees are responsible for:
- Setting the vision and strategy for ESS, and overseeing the development and delivery of the strategic plan. This includes monitoring and learning from the delivery of outcomes and activities.
- Overseeing the income generation strategy and ensuring good financial planning.
- Managing and safeguarding the reputation of ESS and overseeing the strategy for external relations and stakeholder relations.
- Overseeing the recruitment, appointment and management of staff and ensuring compliance with best employment practice.
- Reinforcing a culture of evaluation and learning within ESS and with its stakeholders.
- Ensuring a commitment to equalities throughout policy and practice of ESS.

We asked our 2 exiting Trustees to reflect on their time on the ESS Board…

“Joining the board of Evaluation Support Scotland was my first experience of being a Trustee – and what a brilliant organisation to start with!
Over the past six years, I have had the pleasure of learning about the many dimensions of ESS’s work and developing my skills in charity governance. An ever-present feature of ESS’s work – reflected in the activities of staff and trustees – was starting with the people and building from there.
In a world where we too often get carried away with numerical indicators, measures and metrics, foregrounding people’s lives (in all their rounded complexity) is a real strength and something I have tried to extend into my work outside the organisation.”
– Dr Kevin Guyan
“It has been an enriching and very positive experience for me, and always a pleasure to be working alongside and supporting talented colleagues in the staff team and on the board.
ESS is a special charity, taking very seriously its mission to enable other charities and the sector as a whole to flourish and be effective.
I believe (and we do have the indicators and evidence to support this!) that ESS has been instrumental in promoting an environment of learning, development and improvement in the third sector in Scotland. I know I will miss being directly involved in this endeavour, but will remain a supporter from the sidelines.”
– Jackie Killeen
